FAQ about Existing Domain Name Owners
How long does it take to transfer a domain name?
There are two steps in this process - first, the time it takes for your existing
registrar to release/unlock your domain name, and second, the length of time
required to propagate the internet. Unfortunately, the notice and length of
time required to transfer a domain name depends on your existing registrar's
policies. Some registrars may require as long as one month of notice before
a domain may be transferred. Therefore, it is recommended that you notify
your existing domain registrar a month ahead of the targeted transfer date,
to ensure a smooth transition. The registrar your domain is being transferred
to will usually be propagated throughout the Internet within 48 hours.
When does my domain name expire?
Most top level domain name registrations (com, .net, org, .info, .biz) may be viewed via a whois query from the list below, or from the control panel of your domain registrar. For more information, please contact your domain name registrar directly.
Is my domain name expiration date the same as my web hosting expiration date?
Yes! The domain name and web hosting are separate services and have separate contracts- hence, the expiration dates will be different as well. A domain name expires when your "ownership" of the name expires. Web hosting expires when the "rental of space" for your web site content expires.
Must I renew my domain name with the same registrar as I registered my new domain with?
No. If you have an existing domain name, you may renew the domain name with
any other registrar. However, you need to transfer the domain so that your
domain name is set-up properly when it is moved to your new domain name server.
As in the above, please note that this is different from choosing another
web hosting company. When you renew a domain name, the first date of your renewal begins after the last day your contract expires.
